Dhoom: 3 ([ˈd̪ʱuːm 3], English: Blast 3, Hindi: धूम 3 also abbreviated and known as D:3 and D3) is a Hindi action thriller film, written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and produced by Aditya Chopra.[6] It is the third installment of the Dhoom series. Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra will reprise their roles as Jai Dixit and Ali Akbar while Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif [7] being the antagonist duo. Believed to be one of the most expensive Indian films of all time, Dhoom 3 was released on 20 December 2013 in regular 2D and IMAX formats.[8] It is the first Bollywood movie to be released in the IMAX format.[9] The film was also released in Dolby Atmos.[10][11]
Upon release, the film received positive to mixed reviews from
critics worldwide. The film broke several records on its opening day in
India and abroad,[12][13] Box Office India declared Dhoom 3 "the biggest hit of 2013" after two days of release,[14] with the film grossing
200 crore (US$31 million) worldwide in just three days.[15]
Plot
The film starts in the year 1990 when Iqbal Haroon Khan (Jackie Shroff) runs a circus – The Great Indian Circus – in Chicago, which has fallen on bad times. Anderson’s (Andrew Bicknell)
bank, Western Bank of Chicago, which has lent money to Iqbal Khan,
decides to close down the circus when he is unable to repay the loan.
Young Sahir (master Siddharth Nigam), the little son of Iqbal Khan,
pleads with Anderson not to shut down his father’s circus as he and his
father would soon be able to turn the corner. But Iqbal Khan’s
presentation before the bankers and Sahir’s pleas don’t help. Iqbal Khan
commits suicide in front of the heartless Anderson, leaving Sahir
devastated.
Years later, Sahir (Aamir Khan)
has still not forgotten the high-handedness of the bank and swears
revenge. He keeps looting different branches of the Western Bank of
Chicago with the singular intent of ruining it. Rather than keeping the
loot totally to himself, he distributes some of it among the people of
Chicago. Since Sahir is an outstanding gymnast and an equally brilliant
magician, having trained since childhood under his father, he escapes
unscathed after the loot.Unable to nab the bank thief, the Western Bank
of Chicago seeks the help of the Indian Police as the thief has left a
message in Hindi, on the wall of the bank. Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) and his deputy, Ali (Uday Chopra),
are deputed from the Indian Police to Chicago to help the bank and the
Chicago Police Department. Sahir approaches Jai once he comes to know
that he is the investigating officer in the bank robbery case. He
pretends to help Jai Dixit nab the bank thief by saying that he knows
him (bank thief). However, another branch of the bank is robbed and
although Jai shoots at the bank robber, he escapes after a long chase by
Jai and the Chicago Police. Soon, Jai understands that Sahir himself is
the bank thief. Since Jai needs proof, he delves deeper and what
unfolds in front of his eyes, leaves him speechless. In short, Jai gets
to know Sahir’s secret. But by the time Jai Dixit gathers more material
to nab Sahir red-handed, the bank has asked him to quit investigations.
Unwilling to give up, Jai uses another path to solve the bank robbery
case. He and Ali are helped by Victoria (Tabrett Bethell) of the Chicago police.
Meanwhile, Aliya (Katrina Kaif)
has joined Sahir’s circus troupe and gets involved in a romantic track.
Over a few days, Jai makes headway in the case but this is unknown to
Sahir. And when Sahir realises how Jai has been moving in the
investigation, he is shocked. There comes a stage when Jai is close to
solving the bank robbery case with all proof intact. But Sahir has, in
the meantime, planned his last bank robbery which would sound the
death-knell of the bank.

Production
Development
Even prior to the beginning of the principal photography the film enjoyed a widespread media coverage.[18][19] Because of the box office success [20] and positive reviews from audiences [21][22] for Dhoom 2, the previous installment in the Dhoom series, the sequel had been anticipated by the audience.[23] On 2 January 2011, the producer of the previous Dhoom films, Aditya Chopra confirmed that the third installment of the Dhoom
series would begin principal photography at the end of 2011. Initially,
the producers and the lead actor Aamir wanted to release the film on
Christmas of 2012,[24]
but the plan was scrapped in favor of an early release date in 2013,
mainly due to a forecast that a Christmas release would force a rushed
post-production schedule, which was unfavorable given the high degree of
technicality required for the film.[25]
Reportedly, Aditya Chopra, wanted to make the film in 3D. After observing the success of Haunted 3D, India's first film in the new 3D technology, the Yash Raj Studios felt that Indian audiences
have opened up to 3D cinema viewing. However, actor Aamir Khan opined
that the 3D technology needed expertise and perhaps he was unsure of the
outcome of its utilization by the director.[26] As of September 2012, YRF studios hasn't announced the production of the film in 3D.[27]
Casting
Aamir was signed on to essay the lead role and the antagonist, while Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra will reprise their roles as police officers.[28]
Katrina Kaif was signed as the lead heroine, starring opposite Khan.
Khan and Kaif took up special preparations for their roles. Khan
reportedly learnt ballet,[29] aerobatics[30] and French technique of parkour,[31] a method of movement focused on negotiating obstacles with speed and efficiency, while Kaif took paragliding training and singing lessons.[32] While Bachchan reportedly lost nine kilos of weight to prepare for his role in the film.[33] Rimi Sen, who played the role of ACP Dixit's wife in the previous two installments of Dhoom
series, was not approached to play her character Sweety. However, in an
interview she stated that she wouldn't have done the role even if she
were offered.[34] Dhoom 3 will be directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya who is the writer of all three Dhoom films replacing Sanjay Gadhvi who directed the first two franchise of Dhoom.[28] Stunt Director Olliver Keller was signed to direct the stunt scenes.[35] Aamir Khan said in an interview that his role in dhoom 3 is toughest role so far in his life.[36]
Filming
Filming was supposed to commence from November 2011, with scenes involving Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra being filmed first,[37]
but lead actor Bachchan went on a paternity leave and shooting was
eventually postponed to January 2012. In January 2012, the schedule was
pushed to June 2012 because of lead actor Aamir's prior commitments with
his TV show Satyamev Jayate
and again in June the filming schedule was further postponed for a
month because Khan wanted to prepare himself for his role of a gymnast.
Additionally, Khan wanted to concentrate on marketing and promotions of
his 2012 film Talaash.[38] Without any further delays, filming commenced with Jackie Shroff and Siddharth Nigam, the child actor playing the role of childhood Aamir Khan on 8 June 2012 at Yash Raj Studios, Mumbai.[39] Aamir Khan joined the crew in July, filmed for only 5 days at Yash Raj Studios, then in Chicago, U.S.A..
Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra flew to the U.S.A on 4
August 2012 to complete a 3 month schedule. On arrival to India in
December 2012, Bachchan stated that the shooting was complete by fifty
percent and would resume again, in Mumbai.[40] In the second week of march, 2013, it was reported that the crew went to Zurich and Ticino of Switzerland for filming.[41][42]
The shooting for the film finally wrapped up on 14 September 2013 at a
suburban studio in Mumbai with the presence of Aamir Khan & the
director of the film.[43] The action scenes have been directed by Conrad Palmisano and Sham Kaushal.[44]
Release
In November 2013, Aditya Chopra sent out a message to movie exhibitors all over the country to Go digital or miss Dhoom 3.
Release of movies through digital and UFO digital cinema prevents
piracy as the prints are water-marked and finger-printed and can be
traced back. It is believed that usually films are copied for piracy
when the reels are being transported to theatres in the country and
abroad.Digital cinema curbs piracy as the "en route" content leakage is
eliminated. It also makes sense economically as a producer saves a lot
of print cost. Apart from that, encrypting the content protects the
copyrights of the producers and distributors. Digital prints prevent
duplication of prints and helps by diverting funds back to the cinemas.[45][46][47][48]
IMAX Corporation and Yash Raj Films announced that Dhoom:3 will be the first Indian local language production to be released in the IMAX format.
The film will be digitally remastered in the IMAX format with
proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology and will be
released in IMAX theaters across India and select global locations. IMAX Corp currently has 14 IMAX theaters open or contracted to open in India. Dhoom 3 will be releasing with the latest cinema sound technology Dolby Atmos.
The film will receive a native Atmos mix at YRF Studios. Dhoom 3 was
censored with 12A certificate by British Censors on 12 December 2013.[3] The film was released across 4500 screens in India (Inclusive of Tamil and Telugu versions) along with 700 screens overseas.[49] Dhoom 3 had 250 screens release in West Bengal.[4][50][51][52][53] The ticket prices of IMAX versions of Dhoom 3 cost to the maximum of Rs 900(US$ 15) in India.[54][55][56][57] Cinépolis Pune made a unique record by hosting 54 shows of Dhoom 3 on 20 December 2013.[58]
Marketing
The title logo of the film was released in a video that credited the
main roles of the film. The score for the video constituted paced beats
and electric guitars and was released on Christmas 2012 through Yash Raj Film's official Youtube
channel, confirming the film to be Christmas 2013 release. The first
working as well as promotional poster was also released exactly a year
prior to the actual release date of film.[8]
In August 2013, YRF released a motion poster of the film on Youtube
revealing the first look. It features Aamir Khan, his face is not seen,
standing inside a tall building, looking at some choppers on the air
through a glass window. A voice over reveals that the Chicago police
force is in search for a fugitive biker, who vanishes before he could
get caught.[59][60] The satellite rights of Dhoom 3 have been sold at a record price of
750 million (US$11 million).[5][61][62]The first teaser of Dhoom 3 was released on 5 September 2013 at 12 pm noon.[63][64][65][66] The teaser recorded 6 million views on Youtube within 6 days.[67][68] The film's teaser was also attached with Shuddh Desi Romance.[69][70] On 25 October Yash Raj Films launched a game based on the film for Windows Phones. Developed by 99Games Online (a subsidiary of Robosoft
mobile games), this 3D game is set against the backdrop of Chicago and
opens with a heist by the character played by Aamir Khan.[71][71][72] Within 20 days of its launch, the game witnessed over 1 million downloads on Windows Phone Marketplace and Nokia Ovi Store.[73] The Android, iOS and Blackberry 10 version of the game was launched on 19 November.[73] The theatrical trailer was released in IMAX format on 30 October 2013 as well as on YouTube.[74]
The trailer also became immensely popular on YouTube-India and reached
more than 4 million views within 6 days, subsequently 12 million views
in 20 days.[75][76][77][78] PVR Cinemas began advance booking for selected shows of the film same day the trailer had released, witnessing sales of just under
20 million (US$310,000) till 17 December 2013.[4]Aamir Khan also promoted Dhoom 3 on the sets of Kaun Banega Crorepati.[79][80][81] The publicity campaign included tie-ups with over 17 leading brands including Mattel (manufacture of limited edit action figures, model cars and bikes), Gulf Oil, CEAT, Bombay Dyeing, Archies for stationery and the LINE social messaging application, along with 183 other brands.[2][4][82] There is a marketing pact with BMW Motorrad, which has revealed that its S1000RR and K1300R sport bikes will be featured in the film.[83] A special screening of Dhoom 3 was held in Yashraj Studios on 19 December 2013 in which Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan etc. attended.[84][85] The trailer of Gunday was attached with Dhoom 3.[86]
In an interview with IANS,
Abhishek Bachchan expressed dismay over receiving less preference than
Khan: "...Dhoom is my film and I am the hero. Nobody can take that away
from me. You can be the biggest or the smallest star but 'Dhoom' is
about Jai and Ali. It is as simple as that. If the characters of Jai and
Ali are not there in 'Dhoom', the film won't be there,"[87]

It was announced that the composer of Dhoom and Dhoom 2, Pritam, will return once again to compose the music of the third installment.[88][89][90] The film will have a theme song for Aamir Khan that the actor will sing.[91] Reports earlier suggested that Shefali Alvares had been roped to sing the Dhoom title track, but later it turned out to be a rumour.[92] Aamir said in a statement that the title track Dhoom Machale Dhoom is dedicated to Sachin Tendulkar who was then playing his 200th and final test match at the Wankhede Stadium.[93][94] The title song's video featuring Katrina Kaif and sung by Aditi Singh Sharma was unveiled on 14 November 2013.[95][96] The first look of a song called Malang was revealed on 25 November 2013.[97]
A new teaser Dhoom Tap shows Aamir Khan tap dancing to beats, along
with background dancers. It was unveiled on 3 December 2013. Teaser of a
new song Kamli, featuring Katrina Kaif and sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, was revealed on 6 December 2013. The title song "Dhoom Machale" also has an Arabic version sung by Lebanese singer Naya.[98]

Critical reception
Dhoom 3 received positive[99]
to mixed reviews from critics upon release. The film has been praised
for its direction, cinematography, action sequences, exotic locations,
Katrina's dance performances and Khan's intense portrayal of a villain.
While the script was noted by some critics for its surprising twist, it
was also criticized by others for being unimaginative and dull.
Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama
rated the film 4.5 out of 5 stars and said, "On the whole, DHOOM-3 is
one solid entertainer loaded with attitude and star power that will
leave fans of the series salivating for more".[101] Daily Bhaskar
also rated it 4.5 out of 5 stars. While praising the performance of
Khan, the newspaper wrote "The whole film rests on Khan’s shoulders, and
it won’t be an overestimation to say that he is strong enough to hold
the three hours all by himself".Mohar Basu of Koimoi gave 4 out of 5 stars to Dhoom 3 and stated that the film is "spectacular and majestic".Srijana Mitra Das of Times of India gave the film 4 out of 5 stars: "Dhoom 3 makes you laugh, gasp - even sniffle".Aparna Mudi of Zee News gave the film 4 out of 5 stars and remarked "‘Dhoom 3’ manages to deliver a typically Bollywood revenge saga in a modern way." Sarita A Tanwar of Daily News and Analysis
also gave it 4 stars and commented, "Welcome to the world of
jaw-dropping action and stunts never seen before on Hindi screen. Dhoom 3
redefines the word ‘entertainment’ in the grandest way possible."Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave it 3 out of 5 stars and noted that "Dhoom: 3 is a high-voltage action flick".Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com
gave it 3 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Dhoom 3 continues the tradition of
extravagance in adventure and expenditure by roping in the fastidious
Aamir Khan as its latest star antagonist".Rachit Gupta of Filmfare rated it 3 out of 5 stars and labelled the film as a "slick looking film".Anupama Chopra, writing for Hindustan Times,
gave the film 3 stars and wrote, "The third installment, written and
directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, is bigger and more plot-heavy than
the first two." The Indo-Asian News Service review, syndicated by Business Standard
also gave it 3 stars: "'Dhoom 3' is an intriguing piece of work...
slender supple smart and subtle...and yet helmed by a central
performance that screams for attention."
Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN
gave the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and stated "Dhoom 3 is let down by a
convenient script and its inability to deliver solid entertainment".Raja Sen of Rediff.com gave it 1.5 out of 5 stars and wrote,"Dhoom 3 is a children’s film made for children who’ve never seen a film". Shubhra Gupta of Indian Express
gave the film 2 stars out of 5 but praised its technical aspects and
filming location and said "the third instalment of` Dhoom' has the kind
of tech specs the slickest Hollywood flicks do : superb cinematography,
great-looking sets, expansive foreign locations". Rohit Khilnani of India Today also gave the film 2 stars out of 5, but similarly called it "a visual treat".
Meanwhile, the film also managed to garner praise from foreign film critics. David Chute of Variety
liked the camera work, action, stunts and Aamir's performance:
"Acharya's camera seems to be dancing - and swooning - along with the
performers.... High-flying acrobatics and a standout Aamir Khan
performance dominate the third entry in Bollywood's biggest action
franchise".According to Bill Stamets of Chicago Sun-Times, "Dhoom:3 is crowd-pleasing populist fare.
Box office
India
According to several trade publications, Dhoom 3 has opened to an overwhelming response at the domestic box office. Box Office India
stated that it "has taken bumper initial all over" and "is the best of
the year with multiplexes opening to housefull collections and a similar
story at single screens". The film had an extraordinary opening, recording 75% occupancy in multiplexes and 90-100% occupancy in single screens. The opening day collection of the Hindi version was around
30.9 crore (US$4.7 million), while the dubbed Telugu and Tamil versions collected 2 crore (US$310,000) and 0.6 crore (US$92,000) respectively; and the total collection of the film broke the records previously held by Chennai Express, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Krrish 3. On the second day of its release, it went on to collect 29.5 crore (US$4.5 million), setting new records in several circuits. Dhoom 3 (Hindi) nett. grossed 35 crore (US$5.4 million) on its third day to take Hindi version total to 95 crore (US$15 million) nett approx in the first weekend and further 7 crore (US$1.1 million) nett approx in Tamil and Telugu which took the all language figure to 102 crore (US$16 million), making it the fastest film to reach 100 crore (US$15 million) in India.
Overseas
Dhoom 3 grossed around US$ 12 million in its first weekend in overseas. The film collected $3,305,000(Rs 20.49 crore) in its first weekend in the United States-Canada.

Impact
Subsequently after the films phenomenal performance at the Box office, Amul paid a tribute to the film in one of its creative advertisement campaign posters. The poster features the word's "Dhoom Tea" in the same typography style as film's logo is with a caption "Chased everyday".
