She issued the directive after launching the countrywide campaign to defeat non communicable diseases at Leaders Club in Dar es Salaam yesterday, saying that it was appalling to see public spaces been encroached by people for the purpose of doing their activities.
The Vice-President warned that if the councils fail to restore the grounds, then they should immediately set aside other areas for the members of the public to exercise as a way of preventing non-communicable diseases. She also ordered all regional and district leaders to put in place measures of ensuring that they do physical exercises at least once per month. “Let me say that every second day of Saturday each month will be a day of exercises because doing physical exercises is important for health.
I urge all citizens to make sure they form groups and do exercises and the government will implement its role by providing conducive environment for performing exercises across the nation,” she said.
Moreover, Samia also ordered executives in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Vocational Training to restore exercise programmes in schools. She said jogging at school will help improve students’ health which in turn, will enable them to remain resistance to various diseases.
“I want to see a compulsory system of taking part in morning jogging session at our schools is restored,” she said. Minister for Health Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Ummy Mwalimu said Tanzanians could overcome non communicable diseases through doing body exercises at least three times per week for thirty minutes. She also encouraged people to eat balanced diet, minimising alcohol intake and avoid smoking tobacco.
On his side, former President, Ali Hassan Mwinyi also advised Tanzanians to exercise for the benefit of their own health. He said if Tanzanians will exercise, they will defeat non communicable diseases like heart diseases, diabetes as well as kidney failures. The theme for the countrywide campaign to overcome non communicable diseases is ‘Your Health, Your Capital’.
